The Department has one of the oldest and well established postg raduate programme in the country. The post graduate programme was started in 19 54, offering diploma of nine months duration in Electrical Machine Design and another 3 months dissertation work converting it to ME degree. In 196 3-64, two ME courses on Advnaced Electrical Mahcines and Power System Engg. wer e added on the recommendation of Thacker Committee . The earlier course on machi nes was dropped. Later on two more ME courses on System Engg. & Operation Resear ch and Measurement & Instrumentation were added. Now the department has four c ourses of 1-1/2 year (3 semesters) duration :

• Measurement & Instrumentation (M & I)
• Power Apparatus & Electric Drives (PAED)
• Power System Engineering (PSE)
• System Engineering & Operations Research (SEOR)

The minimum entry qualification is B.E. (Electrical)/ B.E. (Electronics & Communication)/B.E. (Instrumentation) for M & I and SEOR specialization s where as only B.E. (Electrical) for PAED and PSE specializations. Total in take is around 40 students per year including regular, sponsored and self suppo rted candidates. The programme has an All India character of the students. The stud ents also come under QIP (Quality Improvement Programme) schemes a nd from armed forces. The P.G. students have full exposure to hardware and software as pects of the problems during their projects, seminars and dissertations. Be sides new techniques, technologies and tools of Elecltrical Engg., lot of emp hasis is placed on on-line computer applications, artificial neural network tools, power electronics, fibreoptic applications and digital signal processing.
