11 Symposium on Earthquake Engineering


 

The eleventh Symposium on Earthquake Engineering will be held at the University of Roorkee, from December 17-19, 1998. Ten events of similar nature have been held in the past since 1959 at an interval of four years and have made significant impact on education, research and developmental activities in the field of Earthquake Engineering. The proposed event, eleventh in the series, is a step to achieve the goals set by earlier symposia and will provide an opportunity to researchers, professionals, planners and policy makers associated with the field of Earthquake Engineering all over the world to share the latest knowledge and techniques for mitigating the impact of earthquakes on natural and built environment. The event is expected to provide future direction for research in twenty first century through mutual dialogue and exchange of knowledge

Abstracts of papers on the themes related to the field of Earthquake Engineering are invited. Three copies of the abstracts of papers, not exceeding 300 words in length should reach the Organising Secretary, by May 31, 1998. The Abstract should be self contained and include: 1) Objective 2) Methodology and 3) Results and Conclusions. Theme number should appear on the top right corner for each abstract. Provisional acceptance based on review of abstracts will be intimated to the authors by June 30, 1998. Original and two Xerox copies of the full length paper in camera ready form (not exceeding eight pages in length) should reach the Organising Secretary on or before September 30, 1998. Authors will be notified on the suitability of their abstract and the final acceptance will depend upon the review of the full length paper and will be intimated to the authors by October 31, 1998. Only original and unpublished papers should be contributed for the publication in the proceeding of the Symposium. THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THE SYMPOSIUM WILL BE ENGLISH.

Delegates may be accommodated in the Khosla International House ( formerly Asian African Hostel ) and in other residential hostels in the campus. Motel Polaris, a three star hotel, is located adjacent to the University campus and there are other smaller hotels also. Details about accommodation charges shall be provided in the second circular. Delegates may book if they so desire, their accommodation for stay in Delhi and Roorkee through organizers of the Symposium. Accommodation charges are payable by the delegates in addition to the registration fee.

There will be a technical exhibition which will have bearing on the themes of the symposium. Exhibits could be instruments, equipment, software, video films of damage survey, photographs and other publications related to various fields in Earthquake Engineering. Interested organisations and persons are advised to contact the Organising Secretary, for the space of display material for the symposium.

If sufficient number of delegates respond there will be a post-symposium tour to the Garhwal Lesser Himalaya. The tour would involve visit to the strong motion stations and central recording station of the seismological network located at New Tehri Town. On way the delegates will have the opportunity of visiting holy cities like Hardwar and Rishikesh as well as sight seeing at Mussoorie.

Situated in the foot hills of the Himalaya, Roorkee is very close to pilgrimage places and centers of tourist attraction like Hardwar, Rishikesh, Mussoorie etc. Roorkee is located on the Amritsar -Howrah main line of Northern Railway and is well connected by road to Delhi, Dehradun, Hardwar, Rishikesh and other places in Punjab and Haryana. The nearest international airport is New Delhi. Many flights of domestic air carrier operate from Jollygrant airport (Dehradun) which is approximately 70km from Roorkee. Winter is pleasantly cool at Roorkee during December, with temperatures at Roorkee ranging from 20 C to 120 C and heavy woollen clothes are needed.
