The University of Roorkee, a premier institution of education in Enginee ring, Science and Technology, is also the oldest being endowed with rich traditions in engineering education of over 150 years. The University has well developed departments in all the major fields of Engineering & Science and in Architecture which have maintained strong links with both the public and the private sector industry. Roorkee engineers have had a special place in the Indian Railways having played a major and important role in its development. Consistent with this relationship, the Indian Railways has established two Professorial Chairs at the University of Roorkee - one in the area of Bridge Engineering and the other in Dynamics of Rail Vehicle Systems. The main objective in establishing these Chairs is to promote research and development in these two specialized areas and help in dissemination of advanced knowledge and technology transfer. Some of the proposed areas of research and development for Bridge Engineering and Dynamics of Rail Vehicle Systems are listed in the Annexure I.

The appointees to the two Professorial Chairs are expected to provide leadership in conducting and co-ordinating research, development and teaching in the respective areas identified for the Chairs, besides HRD programmes, advice to Railways on specific projects related to the Chairs, coordination of R&D activities with organisations such as RDSO, UIC etc.

The purpose of this letter is to request you to kindly identify and nominate, for one or both the Chairs, suitable persons who will be able to serve the aforesaid purpose. Given below are the relevant details for the two positions:

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. with first class or equivalent (in terms of Grades etc.) at the preceding degree in the appropriate branch, with a very good academic record throughout and a minimum of 10 years teaching/research/industrial experience of which at least 5 years should be at the level of Assistant Professor/Associate Professor.

OR

An outstanding engineer/technologist working in industry and with established reputation, and who has made significant contributions to knowledge but not having a Ph.D. degree.

Desired Experience:

(A) Bridge Engineering: The nominee should be an eminent Structural Engineer with a background in Bridge Engineering with extensive experience in one or more of the areas listed in the Annexure.

(B) Dynamics of Rail Vehicle Systems: The nominee to the Professorial Chair in Dynamics of Rail Vehicle Systems should be an eminent engineer/technologist with extensive experience in research and development in the area of rail vehicle system dynamics in one or more of the areas listed in the Annexure.

Appointment: The appointment to the Chairs will be made on contract basis as per regulations of the University which includes identification of suitable persons by a Search Committee of the University and consideration of their candidature by a duly appointed Selection Committee.

Tenure: The tenure of appointment to the Chairs will be initially for a duration of upto 5 years which may be extended. The upper limit for occupying the Chair is 65 years.

Emoluments: The appointee will be placed at an appropriate level in the scale of Professor in the University and shall also be entitled to draw allowances and benefits applicable to contract employees.
