DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES |
TThe University of Roorkee inducted first batch of students for MBA programme in 1998. The programme was inaugurated on 27th July, 1998 by Mr. Subodh Bhargava, Chairman, Eicher Group of Industries. The organization and course structure of the MBA Programme has been carefully drafted by a group of experts drawn from industry, IIMs, Faculties of Business Management from various Universities and other organizations and the University of Roorkee, keeping in view both, the needs of a balanced MBA Programme and drawing on the strong points of the University.
THE PROGRAMME |
The MBA Programme at the University of Roorkee provides a quality management education comparable with the leading organizations worldwide. The Programme at the University of Roorkee has been approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the U.P. Government. Our first batch comprises students from a diverse background of engineering and professionally experienced candidates, while the others are a combination of fresh graduates from commerce, science and management disciplines.
The programme emphasizes on a consorted approach to learning and enhancement of cognitive, problem-solving and communicative skills. Students are trained to develop the ability to analyse across functional areas and become well equipped to address the multi-faceted problems that arise in managing organisations.
A global perspective is adopted in curricula, summer training, teaching and project assignments. To encourage this approach, the programme aims for an appropriate mix of local and foreign students. The present batch includes six international students. This will foster the forging of strategic business linkages . Faculty includes experts from overseas countries envisaging to inject a global prspective into the programme.
The programme emphasizes an industry and business orientation by bringing practice into the classroom through industry-relevant projects, case studies and interaction with industry. To ensure the relevance of the programme, a platform has been established to receive the advice of leading professionals and industrialists regularly. On an average one expert from industry delivers guest lecture every week. Two workshops on specific topics have also been conducted by eminent experts.
The training aims at a total personality development of the students. This is reflected in trict adherence to punctuality and attendance in classes, and a strict formal dress code during formal occasions. To encourage better interaction the programme is fully residential. The method of evaluation has been evolved in order to make a continuous assessment of academic performance as well as professional orientation of the students.
For selection to the programme, the students undergo a rigorous process of scrutiny, with each step envisaging to ensure a requisite minimum level of competence/aptitude to pursue a career in management.
THE COURSE STRUCTURE |
The course is of two years duration and is divided into four semesters. Each semester carrying five units of teaching weightage. In the First two semesters, students acquire the basic tools needed to manage and lead organisations. In the classroom they master the concepts and theories in the core disciplines of management. At the same time, the progressive learning method helps students leverage upon their experience and put their learning immediately into practice through in dividual analysis of cases and problem solving activities in small groups. As the students' understanding of core management concepts strengthens, flexibility is introduced through wide range of electives in the last two semesters in order to help them build their courses according to individual career plans

Mr. Subodh Bhargava, Chairman, Eicher Group of Companies was the first speaker in autumn. Besides senior managers from IBM Global Services India Pvt. Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Colgate Palmolive & TCIL-Bell South Ltd., BHEL, MTNL, Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, IDBI Bank Ltd. & Tehri Hydro Development Corpn. Ltd. also addressed the students during the semester.
SUMMER TRAINING |
For the present batch, IBM Global Services, Tata Consultancy Services, TCIL-Bell South, BFL Software, ICICI Bank, IDB Bank, SRF Ltd., Indian Airlines and AirIndia are some of the organisations who have agreed to provide Summer Training to students.
SCHOLARSHIPS, AWARDS AND FINANCE FACILITIES |
Besides other scholarships and awards given by the University, recently a cash prize of Rs.10,000/- has been instituted for "Excellence in Human Relation Management Studies". This award has been instituted by Shri Harish C. Midha, Consultant, Toronto, Canada and Mrs. Veena Midha. This will be given every year to the students obtaining highest marks in Human Resource subjects in M.B.A. I year.
The students are given help in obtaining financial assistance from various sources. Besides the Student Loan Aid scheme run by the University, the students could get education loans from Nationalized Banks.
SUPPORT SYSTEMS |
The lecture rooms, syndicate rooms, committee rooms and auditoria are well equipped with modern teaching aids like TV, VCR, Public Address Systems, LCD Projector, Overhead projector and White board. The faculty and students have also been provided with the corporate database of CMIE in addition to other state of the art software packages currently in vogue.
The Department is equipped with modern sophisticated computing facilitie s such as INTEL CELERON @ 300 MHz systems computers and Compaq Deskpro Pentium-I I 300 MHz system with laser and desk jet printers and a flat bed colour scanner. Besides the Central Library, which houses 2,60,810 volumes and subscribes 506 journals (including those of management), the departmental library, in the very first semester of its operations, has been well stocked with about 1000 books, reports and case studies, CDs, Video/ Audio Cassettes and other non book material . The Department subscribes to 46 professionally relevant magazines and periodicals. Reprographic facilities have also been provided in the library.
