2. Title Design and Performance Analysis of Six-phase (High Phase orde r) Induction Machines for Improved Reliability and Stability in A.C.Drives
Sponsored by CSIR, New Delhi
Period 1994-96
P. I. Dr. G. K. Singh
Brief Description The investigations were directed towards detailed analysis of high ph ase order (phases more than three) induction machines as a potential alterna tive to conventional three-phase machines for improved reliability and stability in a.c. drives. Researches on three-phase induction drives reveal several probl ems including undesirable torque pulsation and rotor harmonic losses of thr ee-phase inverter drives and the excess mechanical vibrations and poor perform ance specially during low-speed high torque operation. In view of this, a H.P. O. machine holds a very promising option to the designers and manufacturers of induction type a.c. drives, most suitable for electric vehicle and similar appl ications.
3. Title Power Semiconductor Controlled High Performance Induction Motor Drive
Sponsored by AICTE, New Delhi
Period 1996-98
P. I. Prof. V. K. Verma
Brief Description Project concerns design and development of microcomputer based varia ble speed induction motor drive fed by voltage source PWM inverter. The PWM inv erter employs MOSFETs. Space Vector technique to generate the PWM pattern. Modi fication is also carried out to reduce switching losses in inverter by usi ng Dead Band space vector technique. Softwares are written for on-line and quasi on -line control of inverter.

Different control strategies are used for closed loop drive operation.

  • One strategy uses Fuzzy Logic controllers in both speed and current feedback loo ps with embedded PI controllers for two-degree of control, thus ensuring trackin g and regulating qualities of drive. Other control strategies employ
  • i) two PI control loops with speed and voltage feed backs, and
  • ii) three PI control loops with speed, voltage and current fed backs. The entire software is written in C and implemented on PC-AT. Experimental performance investigations of the drive are carried out.
  • 4. Title Performance analysis of Large Induction Machines Fed through Multiple Independent Phase - Drive Units for Improved Reliability i n Solid-state Drives.
    Sponsored by CSIR, New Delhi
    Period 1996-99
    P. I. Dr. G. K. Singh
Brief Description The proposed research aims at indepth investigation of high phase ord er induction machine and fed through independent phase drive units which are c urrently being studied as potential alternative for large adjustable-speed a.c . drives, such as circulation pump in nuclear power plant, which demand hi gh reliability.
    5. Title Model Order Reduction and its Application in Design of Control System for Different processes
    Sponsored by AICTE, New Delhi
    Period 1997-2000
    P. I. Dr. S. Mukherjee
Brief Description Software packages are to be developed for different techniques of model order reduction in both time and frequencly domain based on existing m ethods. New methods to be developed will also be included in the packages. Typi cal systems will be tried with these packages and results will be compared t o arrive at useful conclusions in terms of suitability of a method in a particul ar process. Existing techniques of designing controllers using reduced order mo del will be taken up for creating software packages. New methods will be trie d for designing controllers to be put in different processes
    6. Title Computer aided design of primary and secondary sensing elements of industrial instrumentation system
    Sponsored by UGC. New Delhi
    Period 1997-99
    P. I. Prof. S. C. Saxena
Brief Description The project aims at developing mathematical models of elastic el ements of Instruments and Field Coupled electro-magnetic (FCE) instruments t o be followed with development of software package and validation of the same package. Elastic elements will include corrugated diaphragms and capsules for pressure sensors where as FCE instruments will be linear variable d ifferential transducer and magnetic circuits for transducers. Based on the mathematical models developed, detail design techniques will be evolved and necessary software will be created. Software will be used for design and then performance evaluation of physically realizable units.

    Sponsored by CBIP, New Delhi
    Period 1996-99
    P. I. Dr J. D. Sharma
Brief Description A multi channel surge recorder to record lightning surge voltage & curre nt conducted by the lighting arrester has been developed at Dept. of Electrical Engg., University of Roorkee, Rooreke. This recorder will be installed in UPSEB, 220KV Substation at Khodri for field testing and data acquisition. It will en able monitoring of the surges on transmission lines. Further modification of surge recorder is being done to adapt it for manufacturing.

Lightning is one of the most important sources responsible for interrupt ion of electric power in modern transmission and distribution power systems. Due to the effect of lightning flashes resulting in outrages & damage, it has becom e important to not only study the effects but also investigate the lightning phe nomena itself. It is proposed to evolve a theoretical lightning model so that th e effects of lightning on transmission lines can be computed and theoritical re sults compared with data acquired from lightning Surge Recorder
