The Institute of Paper Technology at Saharanpur, an industry oriented technological institute, is a unique academic departement of the University of Roorkee in India. It offers academic programmes at various levels in Pulp and Paper Technology. Initially the institute was established in collaboration with Royal Swedish Government in 1964 and merged with University of Roorkee in 1978. The curriculum for the undergraduate, postgraduate and post BSc diploma programmes are modified and updated continuously to keep pace with the changing needs of the pulp, paper and related industries. Workshop and laboratories are well equipped with modern equipment made avaliable through Swedish International development Authority earlier in 1964 and updated time to time with other governmental supports. The library is adequately equipped with technical books and journals.
The departmental research activities are tuned with the needs of industry. These include: Environmental management, Energy efficent process and material conservation, Optimum use of available Indian raw material to modern pulping and bleaching processes , Secondary fiber processing, Evaluation of hydro-dynamic characteristics of pulp suspension. Evaluation of black liquor and improvements in its processing, Evaluating paper surface and printability characteristics, Development of proper controls and use of bio-technological applications.
